This special issue opens a conversation on the intersection of these three concepts and their implications for a variety of disciplines, artistic practices, and philosophies. The dispersion of potential story elements across a diverse collection of media platforms and technologies prompts questions concerning the function of seriality in the absence of fixed instalments, the meaning of narrative when plot is largely a personal construction of each audience member, and the nature of storytelling in the absence of a unifying author, or when authorship itself takes on a serial character. Yet, the precise connections between transmedia networks, serial structures, and narrative processes often remain underdeveloped. The concept of transmedia storyworlds unfolding across complex serial narrative structures has become increasingly important to the study of modern media industries and audience communities. Thus, this chapter explores the ways the music industry can generate cultural and economic value through transmedia projects, and seek to assess the role of music in the diverse transmedia storyworlds that these projects generate. ![]() However, the music industry too has embraced not only cross-media distribution principles, but also world-building and transmedia storytelling models, mixing and remediating itself with other media languages in order to produce narratives and experiences that are centered on music. This is most evident in franchises based on audiovisual products, where the characters, along with the storytelling they generate, are the foundation of a transmedia storyworld. In the meantime, industrial and cultural convergence has opened up new creative and commercial possibilities, allowing single industries to become part of larger networks of synergies that can create value from multiple businesses, outlets and audiences by spreading one core idea, or concept, across different media. ![]() Utilizing this framework can help K-Pop groups elevate their brands, better use storytelling elements, and gain larger, more engaged audiences.įaced with the technological, economic and cultural evolutions of the entertainment world, the music industry has to engage with new business models and consumption habits-suffice it to consider the drop in album sales and the rise of subscription streaming services, such as Spotify. The analysis resulted in a proposed framework that suggests the following components: 1) story as central to the brand 2) authenticity and sincerity 3) idol participation in creative output 4) use of transmedia storytelling and story gaps 5) intertextuality and cohesion 6) opportunities for audience engagement and 7) dedicated creative staff. The importance of transmedia storytelling and participatory audiences is also examined. To investigate BTS’s storytelling strategies, this article breaks down how stories permeate BTS’s content, from music and videos to the Bangtan Universe and documentary films. With their consistent and creative reliance on story, BTS has transformed the K-Pop landscape, providing a framework for others in the industry that relies on open-structure narratives, sincerity, and active audience engagement, among other components. Modern brands know that story is no longer an option, but a requirement for keeping audiences engaged. Good storytelling is at the heart of BTS as both a brand and a band.
